When I click on the three lines, all it does is gray it. The only other thing that shows in “Document overview Shift+Alt+O, which does nothing.

In reply to Barbara H.. If you click on the 3 horizontal parallel lines at the top left of the screen (where the i in a circle used to be), and then click on Outline (instead of List View) in the display that pops up, you will see the word count.

In reply to Barbara H.. Now it appears before character. So when you click on the circle, the first figure you see is the number of words.

What if that i in a circle doesn’t appear? I usually see it, but it’s not there now.
