A contact form is still the simplest way to hear from your visitors. But the plugins behind those forms now do far more: payments, registration, surveys, quizzes, polls, calculators and full workflows.

The category also just shifted. Contact Form 7 runs on more than 10 million sites, and its creator confirmed at WordCamp Asia 2026 that version 6.2 will be its final feature release. A plugin in feature freeze does not break overnight, but everything around it keeps moving.

So we rewrote this guide from scratch. We added four plugins, rechecked every install count and price against WordPress.org and each vendor in July 2026, and reranked the list by user base, free features, development activity and real cost.

Install count alone makes a bad ranking. Contact Form 7 would win on volume and still be the wrong recommendation for most people reading this. So the order below blends four things:

• Development activity. Release cadence over the last 12 months, and whether the team is still shipping features.

A note on prices: everything below is list pricing as checked in July 2026. Most of these vendors run near permanent first year discounts, so confirm the current number before you buy.

1. WPForms

WPForms is the most installed premium form builder for WordPress. The free version, WPForms Lite, sits at over 5 million active installs on WordPress.org, and Awesome Motive puts total usage above 6 million sites across free and paid.

The plugin was renamed to WPForms AI Form Builder in 2026. You can now describe a form in plain language and get a working draft, then edit it in the same drag and drop builder. That builder is still the best in the category for anyone who has never made a form before.

Watch out for: WPForms Lite does not store entries in your dashboard. If your notification email fails, the submission is gone. Conditional logic is also paid only. On renewal price, WPForms is the most expensive plugin on this list.

Verdict: The easiest form builder to hand to a client or a non technical teammate. Budget for the renewal before you commit.

2. Fluent Forms

Fluent Forms has 700,000+ active installs and a 4.8 rating from over 760 reviews. It is the value pick, and the gap is not close.

Conditional logic, entry storage, conversational forms and an AI builder are all in the free version. Competitors charge $59 to $199 a year for the first two alone. Every paid tier then includes every paid feature, so there is no upsell ladder.

It is also the fastest option here. A standard Fluent Forms form loads under 30KB of combined CSS and JavaScript. Several rivals push past 300KB.

Watch out for: The builder exposes a lot at once. If you want the absolute simplest interface, WPForms is calmer.

Verdict: The best all round WordPress contact form plugin for most sites in 2026, and the obvious landing spot if you are migrating off Contact Form 7.

3. Gravity Forms

Gravity Forms has no free version and is not in the WordPress.org directory, so it has no public install count. It is still the plugin most WordPress developers reach for when a form has to do real work.

The pricing model is refreshingly plain. All three tiers include the identical form builder. What changes is how many sites the licence covers and which of the 32 official add-ons you can use. Conditional logic, calculations, multi page forms and file uploads are in every tier, including the $59 one.

Pricing: Basic $59 a year (1 site), Pro $159 a year (3 sites), Elite $259 a year (unlimited sites). Renewals stay at the same rate, which is unusual and welcome.

Watch out for: No free tier and no trial, so you are paying to find out whether you like it. Official add-ons cannot be bought individually. The third party ecosystem is excellent, but GravityView, Gravity Flow and Gravity Perks Pro each add $99 to $349 a year.

Verdict: Buy it if you build sites for clients or need forms that create posts, register users and drive workflows. Skip it for a contact page.

4. Forminator

Forminator from WPMU DEV is the most generous free form plugin in the directory. It has 600,000+ active installs and a 4.8 rating.

Free means free here. Stripe and PayPal payments, conditional logic, file uploads, calculation fields, quizzes and polls are all in the free plugin. Most competitors gate at least three of those.

Pricing: Free core. Pro is not sold standalone. It arrives with a WPMU DEV membership, which starts around $15 a month and bundles hosting, security and performance tools.

Watch out for: The builder is a menu and side panel flow rather than a live visual canvas, which some people find clunky. Template selection is thinner than WPForms. The membership only pricing suits agencies far better than single site owners.

Verdict: If your budget is zero and you still need payments and conditional logic, install this one.

5. Contact Form 7

Contact Form 7 held first place in the earlier version of this post. It has dropped to fifth, and the reason is not performance or security. It is roadmap.

At WordCamp Asia 2026, creator Takayuki Miyoshi confirmed that version 6.2 will be the last release to add new functionality. After that the plugin enters maintenance mode: bug fixes and security patches continue, new features do not. His attention has moved to a successor project, Contactable.io, which is not expected before 2028.

The plugin itself is in good shape. Version 6.1.6 shipped in May 2026 and is tested against WordPress 7.0. It still runs on more than 10 million sites, more than any other form plugin by a wide margin, and the 4.0 rating reflects a decade of users who found the markup based editor confusing rather than any real fragility.

• Extremely lightweight, with Ajax submission

Watch out for: No entry storage without an add-on. No visual builder. No conditional logic, no payments, no multi step forms, and now no prospect of any of it arriving. You configure forms by editing shortcode markup in a text box.

Verdict: Still fine for a single contact page on a site you do not plan to change. If you expect your forms to grow, start somewhere else.

6. Ninja Forms

Ninja Forms from Saturday Drive has 600,000+ active installs and has been shipping since 2011. Its distinguishing feature is the pricing model: premium features are sold as individual add-ons, so you can buy one thing instead of a bundle.

The free core is more generous than it gets credit for. Unlimited forms and submissions, entry storage, CSV export, calculations and 24+ fields, with no paywall on viewing your own data.

Pricing: Free core. Add-ons priced individually. Membership plans run roughly $99, $199 and $499 a year depending on site count.

Watch out for: Conditional logic, file uploads and multi step forms are all separate purchases, and a la carte can end up costing more than a rival’s bundle. The 4.4 rating includes 150 one star reviews, many of them about publishing a form being less obvious than it should be.

Verdict: Good if you need exactly one premium feature and resent paying for twelve. Do the arithmetic first if you need three or more.

7. Formidable Forms

Formidable Forms has 300,000+ active installs and a 4.8 rating. It is the pick when a form is really the front end of an application.

Two things set it apart. The calculation engine is the strongest here, so mortgage, quote and pricing calculators are straightforward. And Formidable Views lets you display collected data on the front end, which turns forms into job boards, directories, listings and event calendars.

Watch out for: The free version is the thinnest on this list. It is a trial, not a usable free plugin. The interface carries a learning curve you would not put in front of a client.

Verdict: The right answer for calculators and data driven forms. Overkill for anything else.

8. SureForms

SureForms is the newest plugin here to reach real scale. Brainstorm Force, the team behind Astra and SureCart, says it now runs on more than 500,000 sites.

Its whole argument is that you should not have to learn a second interface. Forms are built from native blocks inside the block editor, using the same drag, reorder and duplicate gestures you already use on pages. If you build with Gutenberg, this is the least friction of any option here.

The AI builder is the other notable piece. Describe the form you want and SureForms generates editable blocks, with no external API key required.

Watch out for: The integration library is smaller than WPForms or Gravity Forms, and the plugin is young enough that its long term track record is unproven.

Verdict: The most natural fit for block editor sites. If your whole workflow already lives in Gutenberg, try this before the older builders.

9. Everest Forms

Everest Forms has 90,000+ active installs and the highest rating in this roundup at 4.9 from 374 reviews. Note that the install figure is lower than older articles report, in line with the wider WordPress.org counting changes of early 2026.

Its pitch is a free version that includes things rivals charge for: file uploads, image uploads, unlimited entry storage, admin approval and 35+ fields. An AI form builder landed in version 3.5.0 in June 2026, along with a Contact Form 7 migration path.

Watch out for: In April 2026 a critical vulnerability in Everest Forms Pro (CVE-2026-3300, CVSS 9.8) was actively exploited in the wild, with Wordfence blocking more than 29,000 attempts. It was patched in version 1.9.13. The response was quick, but if you run this plugin, automatic updates are not optional. Conditional logic is Pro only.

Verdict: Excellent free tier and a WPForms like experience at a lower price, as long as you stay patched.

10. Bit Form

Bit Form is the smallest plugin here by install base, at 10,000+, and it holds a 5.0 rating. Bit Apps has been building it since 2020.

The selling point is weight. A Bit Form form loads roughly 15KB of combined JavaScript and CSS, which makes it the lightest option on this list. If Core Web Vitals are a live problem on your site, that is worth knowing.

Watch out for: A 10,000 install base means fewer tutorials, fewer third party add-ons and a smaller pool of people who have hit your exact problem before. Conditional logic, payments and multi step forms are Pro features.

Verdict: The best price to performance ratio here. Pick it if page speed and design control matter more than ecosystem size.

11. FormGent

FormGent from wpWax is the youngest plugin on this list, at 1,000+ active installs and version 1.11.0 as of July 2026. It earns a place because of one decision: conversational forms are free.

Almost every competitor markets conversational and multi step forms as essential, then puts them behind a paid plan. FormGent ships both in the free version, along with Stripe, PayPal and Mollie payment blocks. Forms are built from blocks, so it sits naturally inside the block editor.

Watch out for: With only 1,000 installs and a handful of ratings, this is an early bet. The template and integration libraries are small next to the established players.

Verdict: Worth trialling if completion rate is your metric and you want conversational forms without paying for them. Do not put it on a client site you cannot babysit yet.

What Contact Form 7’s Feature Freeze Actually Means For You

The headlines called it abandonment. That is wrong, and the distinction matters if you are one of the 10 million sites running it.

Here is what is true:

• Security patches continue. Version 6.1.5 in February 2026 included a security fix. Your forms are not about to become a liability.
• Compatibility work continues. 6.1.6 is tested against WordPress 7.0.
• Features stop after 6.2. No AI generation, no conditional logic, no payment fields, no conversational forms. Ever.
• The successor is years out. Contactable.io is targeted for 2028 at the earliest.

So nothing is urgent. But migration gets harder as forms get more complex, which argues for moving while yours are still simple.

The good news is you do not rebuild by hand. Fluent Forms, Formidable Forms and Everest Forms all ship one click Contact Form 7 importers. Fluent Forms brings entries across too, not just form structure.

One Plugin We Removed From This List

Visual Form Builder was in the previous version of this post. We have pulled it, and we think you should stop recommending it too.

The developer has published a notice on the VFB Pro site stating that the plugin is no longer supported or maintained and will not receive regular updates. The free version has followed the same path. It still has tens of thousands of active installs, which is the concerning part: an unmaintained form plugin handling user input is exactly the profile attackers look for.

If you are running it, Formidable Forms and Everest Forms are the closest replacements in feel.

Also Worth A Look

These did not make the main list, mostly because they solve narrower problems. They are still the right answer in specific situations.

• Elementor Pro Forms. Ships inside Elementor Pro. If you already pay for it, you may not need a form plugin at all.
• MetForm. Built for Elementor, with 40 widgets and Stripe and PayPal support. Keeps your whole site in one editor.
• WS Form. The developer’s choice. The most granular control here, and the steepest learning curve.
• JetFormBuilder. Block based and strong on free features, especially for dynamic and post submission forms.
• Jetpack Forms. Free, block native and possibly already on your site. No templates, no customisation, fine for a basic contact page.
• HubSpot Forms. Worth it only if you are already committed to HubSpot’s CRM.

Two things are easy to overlook. Check whether entry storage is included, because losing a submission to a failed notification email is a real cost. And check the renewal price, not the first year price.
