How to Use the WordPress Categories Block (Beginner’s Guide)

The categories block comes with the WordPress editor by default. Using the Categories Block is very easy! Just follow the post.

1. Adding the Categories Block

Step 1: First of all, open the post or page where you want to add the categories block.

Step 2: Click on the Add Block button or  ‘+’ icon to add a new block.

Step 3: Search for “Categories” and select the Categories Block. When you click on the block, it will be inserted on your page. 

If you like to Insert ‘Categories List’ block then search for ‘Categories List’ and insert the block by clicking on it. 

2. Customizing the Categories Block

If you wish you can customize your categories block, you can do it from the block settings. Though there isn’t much customization available for the categories block, but there a lot of settings for Categories List block. You can only customize the CSS for the categories block. 

As for the Categories list block, you can adjust the following settings. 

Display as Dropdown: This option allows users to select categories from a dropdown menu.

Show Post Counts: Show the number of posts in each category.

Show only top level categories: This option hides the hierarchy option and shows only top level categories you have. 

Show empty categories: If you have any empty categories, this option will show those categories. 

Show Hierarchy: Display parent categories with their child categories nested underneath.

3. Styling and Layout

Alignment: If you like to align your category block, do it from the toolbar above the block. 

You can set your block alignment as left, center, right.

Styles: To adjust colors and typography you can access the Styles tab of the block settings.

 Then, alter as you like. 

Tips for Effective Use:

Strategic Placement: You should always consider where the Categories Block would best serve your website’s navigation and user experience. Common placements include footers, sidebars, or after blog posts.

Try to Keep it Tidy: If you have a large number of categories, then it is suggested that you use a plugin that allows for hierarchical display (categories with subcategories) to maintain organization.

Match Your Website’s Style: Customize the block’s appearance to blend with your website’s overall design aesthetic seamlessly.
