Managing content in WordPress has come a long way since the Classic Editor days.
With the Block Editor, also known as Gutenberg, WordPress introduced a visual, drag-and-drop interface that makes it easier than ever to structure content precisely.
Adding a new post from scratch or updating an existing one, everything now revolves around blocks. Once you get the hang of it, it’s incredibly efficient.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of adding and updating content using the WordPress Block Editor.
This is especially useful for bloggers, business site owners, and anyone who wants more control over their layout.

What Is the WordPress Block Editor?
The Block Editor breaks your content into individual blocks. Think of each paragraph, image, video, quote, or list as its block that you can move, edit, and customize independently.
It replaces the older Classic Editor’s single-text-field approach with a modular format. That means more flexibility and fewer plugins to create a simple layout.
If your theme or plugins offer, you can use blocks for text, media, columns, tables, buttons, widgets, and custom content.
How to Add or Update Content in WordPress Block Editor?
First, we will show you how to add content to the Gutenberg Block Editor. You will not require any plugin for that, nor coding skills. All you need to do is follow the steps below.
How to Add New Content Using the Block Editor?
To work in the block editor, you must create a post or page where you can add your needed content.
Step 1: Add A New Post or Page
From your WordPress dashboard, head to Posts > Add New or Pages > Add New, depending on what you want to create.
The Block Editor will open with a blank canvas and a default “Title” field at the top.
Step 2: Add A Title
Now add a title to your post or page. This becomes the heading for your content and is typically used in your site’s URL and metadata.
Below the title, start typing. Every time you hit “Enter,” a new Paragraph block is automatically created.
Step 3: Add Content
If you want to insert another type of content other than text, click the + button (1) to choose a block or type the block name in the search box (2) and click the block when it appears (3).
So, this is how you add content to your WordPress Block Editor. You can add any content you like using this step, such as images, videos, tables, buttons, columns, groups, etc.
After adding all necessary content, you must hit the post or page’s Publish or Save draft button to save your progress.
How to Update Content Using the Block Editor?
To update the existing content in the block editor, go to Posts > All Posts or Pages > All Pages and click Edit under the content you want to update.
Step 1: Go to Your Post or Page
Step 2: Edit Your Content
You can customize or stylize your content or block from the block’s top bar or the editor’s right sidebar.
You can add, customize, or remove your content if you like.
Step 3: Update Your Content
When the post or page opens, please notice that there is no Save or Save draft button at the top.
As soon as you edit, customize, or modify your content or blocks in the post or page, you will see the appearance of the Save Draft button.
Tips: (If the post or page is already published, you will see the Publish button turned into the Save button and no Save Draft button.)
For my case, I’ve deleted some of my text content to modify it. After doing all the modifications, you can save your progress by hitting the Save or Save draft button.
So this is how you update your content.
Final Thoughts!
Once you get comfortable with the Block Editor, it becomes a powerful tool that makes content creation feel like designing a layout rather than writing in a plain text box.
You can format, rearrange, and enhance your content with just a few clicks, and the modular approach means each element stays clean and manageable.
