How to Use WordPress Block Patterns (Complete Guide)

When managing a website, there are often cases where you want to reuse the same elements on multiple pages on your website.

This could be anything such as a pricing table, call-to-action, or an information box

Instead of recreating these elements over and over again for all your pages, WordPress gives you the power to reuse the same element multiple times on various pages.

This can be done using Block Patterns.

In this guide, I’ll teach you everything about Block Patterns including how to use them, how to find new block patterns, and how to create your own Block Patterns.

That being said, let’s first try to understand what are WordPress Block Patterns and how they work.

What are WordPress Block Patterns?

WordPress Block Patterns is a collection of pre-made collection of blocks that you can use on your posts, pages, and anywhere on your website.

These could be anything such as a pricing table, multi-column layouts, call to action, buttons, headers, etc. A Block Pattern can be customized fully when it’s inserted into your post or page.

WordPress by default comes with Block Patterns that can be found in the block editor as shown below.

Apart from this, many WordPress theme developers also provide their own Block Patterns that match the look and feel of their theme.

But if you want more Block Patterns, WordPress has a library of patterns where you can search and download patterns you like.

Lastly, you can even create your own Block Patterns in WordPress quite easily which I’m going to teach you later in this guide.

How to Use WordPress Block Patterns

As I mentioned above, WordPress provides some default Block Patterns that you can insert into your posts and pages.

Using these Block Patterns is quite easy. Let me show you how:

Step 1. Go to the block editor by editing any post or page on your website.

Step 2. In the editor, click on the Add Block (+) button and switch to the Patterns tab to view all the available patterns.

Here, you’ll be able to view all the patterns you can use. You can even filter patterns by category.

You can also click on the Explore button to view Patterns with a larger view.

Step 3. Once you find a pattern you like, click on it and it’ll be inserted into your post/page.

Step 4. After your Pattern is inserted, click on any element of the pattern and edit it like you would edit any other block in the WordPress editor.

This is how you can use and edit WordPress Block Patterns. You can customize them fully according to your needs and turn basic designs into beautiful sections or elements for your website.

How to Find New WordPress Block Patterns

The default Block Patterns provided by WordPress are good but you can find even better patterns online.

The first place you can find patterns is the Block Pattern Directory by WordPress where you can find thousands of Block Patterns.

These patterns are created by both WordPress and the WordPress community. You can browse patterns by category and popularity.

You can also search for patterns if you’re looking for something specific.

If you find a Block Pattern here you like and want to use on your website, just move your mouse over the pattern image.

On hover, you’ll see a copy button. Click on the Copy button which will copy the pattern to your clipboard.

Now head over to your post/page and paste the block by clicking the Ctrl (Cmd) + V shortcut key.

This will paste your copied pattern and now you can customize it to your liking.

How to Create Your Own WordPress Block Patterns

Want to create and share your own Block Patterns?

WordPress gives you the ability to create your own patterns that you can use or share publicly allowing others to use it as well.

Here are the instructions on how to create your own WordPress Block Patterns:

Step 1. Go to the Block Pattern Directory website and click on the ‘Create New Pattern’ link.

Step 2. Now, you’ll have to log in to WordPress.org or create a free account if you don’t have an account.

Step 3. Once you’re signed in, you’ll be redirected to a WordPress block editor page. Here, you can add elements to create the layout pattern you want.

You can use all the WordPress default blocks available to create your desired pattern.

Step 4. Once your pattern is ready, click on the Submit button and your pattern will be submitted for review.

Note: Please read the Block Pattern guidelines to ensure your pattern is approved in the Block Pattern Directory.

Step 5. Once your pattern is approved and published, you can view it and all other patterns from the My Patterns page.

If you wish to use patterns only for yourself, you can simply save them as drafts instead of publishing them.

This way, you will be able to copy patterns for your personal use and your created patterns will not be visible in the Block Pattern Directory.

Conclusion

So, that’s all about WordPress Block Patterns and how you can use them for your WordPress site. We’ve learned how to find, use, and create your own Block Patterns.

I hope this guide helped you in learning more about Block Patterns and hopefully, you’ll be able to create your own block patterns.
